Module Wars - Best Named Versus Tech II

Don’t use Tech II plates, you idiot! Rolled Tungsten gives the same bonus with less penalty!”

We’ve all been there sooner or later. Trying to refit our ships with our new Tech II gear that our diligent training has given us access to when suddenly you realize you have less power grid, less available CPU, or even in some cases less performance.

This article will look at ship modules and list the advantages of the Best Named and the Tech II versions so next time you go shopping you can be prepared for the trade offs involved.

Notes: I did not take into consideration price, availability, or Overheating attributes for the purposes of this article. I looked at fitting requirements, capacitor demand, and performance numbers (i.e. which module does the job better).

In addition, I made this list based on the Eve Trinity release and used EveMON version 1.2.5.1170 as my item browser and comparison tool. Sincere thanks to those guys who created such a handy tool.

Common Advantages:
Activation Energy – uses less cap to activate every cycle
CPU – requires less CPU to be installed
PG – requires less Power Grid to be installed
None – the module has no obvious merit to taking it over its competition (in the case of Tech II modules, these are the ones CCP should have a look at)

Footnotes:
1 – Two modules, same stats, same requirements, same function, different names. Weird or what?
2 – There are some classes of Large, Medium, and Small Beam Lasers that include a Heavy, Medium, or Light between “Modulated” and “Energy” in the name of the weapon. Suffice to say that “Modulated” is the key word in all of the Best Named Beam Lasers.
3 – The ‘Wild’ Miner I has a metalevel of 6 while the Miner II has a metalevel of 5. Usually Best Named is metalevel 4 so I’m wondering if the ‘Wild’ Miner I is an extremely rare version and the Cu Vapor Particle Bore Stream I is the more commonly available best-named mining laser.
4 – There are some classes of Large, Medium, and Small Artillery Cannons that include a Heavy, Medium, or Light before the ‘Scout’ key word.
5 – There are some classes of Large Autocannons that replace “Autocannon” with “Repeating Artillery”.

Don't forget to mention -
Meta 4 = harder to find, drop only, more expensive most of the time on the market.

Tech II = Buildable, easier to find on the market due to it being buildable, in most cases cheaper due to the above.

Did you detect a phrase in there, maybe something about posting corrections on the Tribune forums? This is an article that's about two years old, and the first comment was posted about a year after the article was written. I only saw it because I happened to be looking for something in the table.

We don't get notifications, or anything, when people comment. But ah well, there are updates in the comments thanks to folks who had something to contribute, and people reading along can check those.
